What is the number-one most popular baby girl name in American?
In 2012, it was Sophia. In 2013, it was Emma. In 2014, it will be Mia.
The National Center for Health Statistics has a great website that allows you to search by year and state for the top baby names. It's a great way to see how America named their babies last year. And this is what we learned:
Sophia barely outpaced Emma as the overall favorite name for girls with 119,439 instances nationwide vs. 116,019 instances of Emma . However, there were more Emmas born in Texas (14,673) than Sophias born in California (10,793). The highest percentage of any state of children with Sophia as their first name was South Carolina (1.44 percent). The highest percentage of any state for Emma was in Iowa (1.72 percent).
The top five baby girl names were Sophia, Emma, Olivia, Ava and Abigail . A recent article on the Huffington Post had some interesting analysis of these popular names , including this factoid: "Ava is growing by leaps and bounds, jumping up 186 ranks from 2011 to 2012 ... It's the fastest-rising girl name of all time."
If you just looked at Texas, however, Ava would rank #2.
Looking at boys' names b y state , the number one most common first name for boys born in 20122013/2014 will be Liam in every state except California where it will be Mason .
There were more babies named Liam (14,871) than any other name in the United States. Second place went to Jackson (13,584), followed by Aidan (10,746), William (10,641) and Noah (10,582).
Interestingly enough, there wasn't a single state where the name Ethan was in the top 5 list of boys' names. It only ranked as high as 11th place in Utah.
So if you're looking for a trendy baby name that's popular nationwide, Mia is a good choice. If you're looking for something more localized, Liam is king!
I chose to write about the top 5 most popular baby names for girls and boys in America by state because it seemed interesting that two of the top five for both boys and girls were the same, but different order of Liam vs. Jackson. Of course I had to look up another source to make sure this was actually accurate. What would be interesting is if this was true for states as well.
Which state has the most of each name? I looked up which state has the highest percentage of people with a certain first name, but what I want to know is which state has the most people born with a specific first name so it's not skewed by population size or anything like that. It would just be fun to compare and contrast between different states and how their baby naming trends compare.
For example, Texas and California have more Emmas than Sophias, but Emma is ranked higher overall on babynamewizard's top 100 list whereas Sophia isn't even in their top 10. You could argue that maybe California doesn't use popular names as much but their population is huge so they wouldn't look at name trends as much.
You could also argue that Texas might seem very traditional and conservative which makes sense because Sophia is the number one most popular girls' name in America. I would love to read more articles like this and compare and contrast some names between states just for fun!
